20 April 2012 г.RNT at Navitech-Expo 2012: the first wide-scale demonstration of the solutions for mobile devices on the basis of iOS and Android
Russian Navigation Technologies (RNT), one of the leaders of the Russian market of the motor vehicle tracking and control systems, has demonstrated for the very first time its most important new development – a simple vehicle tracking solution for modern mobile devices on the basis of IOS and Android operating systems. Limited-scale testing of the software among clients will begin as early as in the second half of May and in two months it will be released into commercial use. It is noteworthy that the introduced development is a complete technological solution covering mobile and desktop workstations, server software and “cloud” services of the GLONASS/GPS-enabled vehicle tracking and control system AutoTracker. This solution has no analogs in the Russian market and it opens a new course of development of the fleet management systems.
For the first wide-scale demonstration of its new development RNT had chosen the 4th international exhibition Navitech-Expo 2012 (Moscow, Expocentre Exhibition Center), which was held from 17 to 19 of April in the framework of the “Innovative Russia Week”. On the one hand, this Exhibition traditionally encompasses all forms of practical use of navigation products and services by state enterprises, mass market and by enterprises operating in the field of automotive, aviation, railway and river transport as well as in the construction area. On the other hand, it is here that the global and the local leading developers of navigation equipment, transport tracking and management systems, navigation systems and cartographic and logistic software demonstrate their achievements.
At its booth, not only has RNT made a presentation of the new development, but also has given the visitors an opportunity to operate a real tracking system personally using iPad, iPod and Android based tablets as well as desktop software displayed on the 55” interactive touch screen with multi-touch technology support. During the exhibition a few vehicles connected to the AutoTracker system were constantly moving around Moscow; their locations were displayed on the screen and the tablets in a real-time mode and the visitors had a chance to track relocations of the vehicles, compare various electronic maps and even contact the drivers to learn about their actual location and compare it with the tracking results. All these have aroused much interest and during the three exhibition days over hundred “volunteer dispatchers” have worked with the RNT mobile solutions.
The major priorities in creating a line of RNT mobile systems were impeccable operation on all popular platforms, maximum intuitiveness and simplicity of the user interface that allow working with the software without training or self-study documentation. Vehicle location is displayed on the electronic maps and users can literally switch between Yandex, Google Maps and OpenStreetMap. The maps can be moved and scaled by means of the multi-touch technology. Another useful feature is associated with detailing of vehicle current status. Namely, it enables to distinguish situations both when a vehicle is actually not moving and its location is accurately reflected on a map and when a vehicle has already moved to another place and the point on the map is not updated, because a vehicle is out of a cellular network coverage area, due to failure in on-board equipment operation or for any other reason.
Prior to the release into commercial use, the AutoTracker mobile software will be enriched with a number of additional features. Among them there will be remote diagnostics of equipment and download of the vehicle movement trajectory over a certain period, duration of which is set in the desktop applications. Additionally, collection of statistical data needed for the future improvement of the software will be activated in both server and desktop software. In the future, support of PUSH notifications about restrictions violation (set in the desktop applications and automatically tracked in the AutoTracker servers) will also be added. Such restrictions can be related, for example, to the exit of the vehicle out of limits of a permitted area, speed limit violation or violation of regulatory parameters of driving. In addition, there also will be software versions reflecting divisions of roles in the vehicle management.
At the same time, the RNT’s new development is created in accordance with the “Tracking at your fingertips” concept; accordingly, functionality of the mobile software is not going to be unreasonably extended to duplicate the possibilities of the desktop software, overcomplicate user interface and overburden the programs. In the AutoTracker line, the systems for the mobile devices are positioned as maximally easy and simplified mobile additions to the fully functional desktop applications and “cloud” services: the traditional client software AT-Visor or the Web application AT-Web 2.
“Tablets and smartphones have become an integral part of our lives, we are used to them in the business environment and their employment in the vehicle tracking opens entirely new possibilities, which are extremely needed in the real life. When creating our line of mobile solutions, we strived to find their exact place in the general architecture of the tracking system. We had to find accurate balance between easiness and functionality and to correctly allocate functions between different kinds of workstations. After much trial and error we succeeded to find the golden mean and to reflect it in the “Tracking at your fingertips” concept and to implement it in the mobile, server and desktop software", says Ivan Nechayev, General Director of Russian Navigation Technologies. “Our Company enters the field of mobile devices to stay. I am sure that the new developments by RNT will also become a basis for our expansion in this market and will facilitate development of a new competition area in the fleet management field."
